IFoS and IES Recruitment in 2026: Indian Forest Service and Engineering Services Pay Scale, Postings, and How These Compare With UPSC IAS

Two UPSC exams sit quietly outside the IAS spotlight every year. The Indian Forest Service recruits roughly 150 officers. Engineering Services recruits over 450. The work, the postings, and the daily texture are unlike anything Civil Services Mains would prepare you for.

UPSC IFoS 2025 notified 150 vacancies in January 2025. The Engineering Services Examination 2025 opened around 474 vacancies across Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics and Telecommunications streams. Both join at the same officer pay matrix as IAS: Pay Level 10, basic ₹56,100, with in-hand near ₹85,000 after allowances in 2025.

The paycheck matches. The career does not.

An IFoS officer is posted as Assistant Conservator of Forests in a divisional headquarters, often in a remote landscape. Wildlife protection, forest produce, anti-poaching operations, and tribal welfare are the daily work. The career runs through DFO, Conservator, Chief Conservator up to Principal Chief Conservator of Forests at the state level.

IES officers run the country's railways, telecom, power, defence procurement and central public-sector engineering wings.

IES officers join as Assistant Executive Engineers in cadres like Indian Railway Service of Engineers, CPWD, BRO, MES and CEWE. The work is technical from day one, and lateral movement into PSU senior management or international consulting is common after fifteen years. The IAS path stays administrative; IES stays technical; IFoS stays in the field. Three different careers, one common pay slip.

If you have an engineering degree or a science background and the IAS path feels generic, study one IES or IFoS Mains paper this week. The syllabus will tell you whether the work fits before you commit two years to a different exam.
