Class 10 Physics in 2026: Electricity and Light Chapters That Decide Board Exam Marks and Set Up NEET and JEE

Physics inside the Class 10 Science paper looks small at 25 marks out of 80. It is also the section that quietly decides who later survives JEE Main mechanics and who clears NEET UG physics. The chapters are short. The leverage is long, and it shows up two years later.

The Science paper is 80 marks of theory plus 20 marks of internal assessment, with a 30-mark practical sitting inside that internal slot. The CBSE 2026 paper has raised the competency-based question share, which means circuit diagrams and ray diagrams now need reasoning, not just memory recall.

Two chapters carry the bulk of Physics marks: Electricity (12 marks) and Light Reflection and Refraction (12 marks). The Human Eye and Magnetic Effects of Current sit alongside at 6 to 7 marks each, with Sources of Energy adding a final 2 to 3 marks.

Electricity alone is the size of a full mini-paper inside the Science exam.

Ohm's law, series and parallel circuits, and power calculations show up again in Class 11 current electricity and Class 12 electrostatics. The student who solves 50 numerical problems on circuits in Class 10 walks into Class 11 with a year of confidence already built in.

Ray diagrams are the most common place students lose easy marks. Convex mirror, concave lens, sign convention. Practise drawing each one from memory until it is muscle.

A student who masters Class 10 ray optics rarely struggles with Class 12 Light chapters.

If you plan to attempt NEET or JEE later, treat Class 10 Physics as Day Zero of that preparation. Solve every NCERT in-text question and exercise problem. The board marks will follow, and the foundation will hold for two more years.
